Public Hearing on the Wasatch Neighborhood Parking Program

A formal application has been filed from the Wasatch Neighborhood and processed by the City Council and Administration to implement a new parking permit program for about 485 households and property owners in the neighborhood. The proposal was sponsored by Council Vice-Chair Kim Santiago, and a petition was circulated throughout the neighborhood and received over 130 signatures in its favor.

As a result, a parking permit program has been recommended for approval. A public hearing will be held to solicit public comment on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 in the Council Chambers at the City Center Building, 351 West Center St., and beginning at 5:30 P.M.  Anyone interested is invited to attend.
The parking permit program was proposed in Wasatch Neighborhood in order to address:

  •  Street congestion due to neighborhood proximity to BYU campus
  • Forthcoming policy change by BYU to charge for parking permits beginning August 2015
  • Ineffective and unenforced on-street regulations for two-hour parking
  • Inability of residents to accept visitors, send/receive mail, remove snow/debris, etc. due to street congestion
  •  Safety concerns for pedestrians, especially young children commuting to school

In order to comply with Provo City Code Section 9.80, the Provo City Parking Committee has established guidelines for a parking permit program in a portion of the Wasatch Neighborhood.
